Enter any two of distance, time and pace, and the calculator works out the third. It shows the pace per kilometre and per mile, the speed in km/h and mph, and what that pace means over the usual race distances. Everything runs in your browser.

How pace, time and distance fit together

Pace is time divided by distance. A 10K in 55:00 is 3,300 seconds over 10 km, so 330 seconds per kilometre, which is 5:30 /km. The other two directions are the same sum turned around: time is pace times distance, and distance is time divided by pace.

Miles and kilometres differ by a fixed factor. One mile is 1.609344 km, so a pace per mile is the pace per kilometre times 1.609. 5:30 /km becomes 8:51 /mile. Speed is the same number upside down: 3,600 divided by your seconds per kilometre gives km/h. Treadmills show speed, watches show pace, and the table below lets you go from one to the other.

Pace chart: min/km, min/mile, speed and race times

Every pace from 3:00 to 8:00 per kilometre in 15-second steps, with the matching pace per mile, the speed, and the finish time for a 5K, 10K, half marathon and marathon run evenly.

Run the pace on your Apple Watch

Knowing the number is the easy part. Holding it is harder, because the current pace on the Watch moves around with GPS and your stride. In Vanoor you set a pace target for the run or for each split of a workout, and the Watch shows a band: green inside it, red when you are too fast or too slow. Switch on Off-pace alert in Settings → Alerts and a tap on the wrist tells you when you drift out. For a race with a plan for every split, use the split planner.

Questions

How do I convert min/km to min/mile?

Multiply by 1.609. 5:00 /km is 8:03 /mile, and 6:00 /km is 9:39 /mile. To go back, divide by 1.609.

How do I turn treadmill speed into pace?

Divide 60 by the speed. 12 km/h is 60 / 12 = 5 minutes per kilometre. For mph the answer is minutes per mile: 6 mph is 10:00 /mile.

Why does my watch show a different pace than the calculator?

The calculator assumes an even pace over an exact distance. On the road your pace changes with hills, turns and crowds, and GPS adds a little distance on most courses. Over a marathon that can be a few hundred metres, which is why race pacers aim slightly faster than the chart.

What is a good running pace?

The one you can hold for the distance you run. For easy runs that is a pace where you can still talk in full sentences. For a race goal, start from a recent result: the race time predictor turns one race into a target for the next.
